100 k.y. pacing of the East Asian summer monsoon over the past five glacial cycles inferred from land snails

چکیده

Abstract The effects of orbital forcing on the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) after mid-Pleistocene transition are controversial. Chinese cave δ18O records only show low-latitude ∼20 k.y. cycles, while pedogenic proxy from loess dominated by highlatitude 100 cycles. This discrepancy may result multicomponent origin proxies, particularly for signals in deposits, where primary climatic modified smoothing, leaching, and changes sedimentation rate, latter also being forced We present an EASM record spanning past 470 central Loess Plateau based δ13C values land snail shells (δ13Cshell), which eliminates influence above processes exclusively local precipitation. δ13Cshell is cycle, with more depleted during interglacials compared to glacials. At end marine isotope stage (MIS) 11, δ13Cshell-based precipitation remained at interglacial level following MIS 11 super-interglacial climate Northern Hemisphere, although a glacial period had commenced global basis. Overall, our highly coupled high-northern-latitude ice-volume variations, possibly supporting high-latitude EASM.

Impact of variability in the Indian summer monsoon on the East Asian summer monsoon

We report on model experiments that support the hypothesis that the second mode of variability of the East Asian Summer Monsoon is influenced by the variability of the Indian Summer Monsoon. The results suggest that the recent trend towards drier conditions in northern China in summer is, at least partly, a consequence of the synchronous drying trend over India in summer noted by some authors. ...

East Asian summer monsoon precipitation variability since the last deglaciation

The lack of a precisely-dated, unequivocal climate proxy from northern China, where precipitation variability is traditionally considered as an East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) indicator, impedes our understanding of the behaviour and dynamics of the EASM. Here we present a well-dated, pollen-based, ~20-yr-resolution quantitative precipitation reconstruction (derived using a transfer function) ...

A tree-ring reconstruction of the South Asian summer monsoon index over the past millennium

The South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) is a major atmospheric synoptic climate system affecting nearly a quarter of the human population. Climate proxy data derived from tree rings, ice cores, speleothems, and other sources can all contribute to an understanding of SASM variability prior to instrumental period. Here, we develop an optimal information extraction (OIE) method, which we use to reco...

Intermodel spread of East Asian summer monsoon simulations in CMIP5

In this paper we diagnose the intermodel spread in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) simulations in the context of the moist static energy and moisture budgets. We find that the spatial distribution of the EASM precipitation simulated by different models is highly correlated with the meridional stationary eddy velocity, defined as the dev...
